More than four years after the tragic events of September 11, America has made real progress in securing the homeland. But there is a gaping hole that remains along the southern border, and America’s enemies will do everything they can to exploit it.

Texas: Decisive Action to Secure the Border

If you were a member of Al Qaeda, or another terrorist enemy group, would you try to sneak into our country through contained, highly secured airports, or across barren stretches of land that welcome millions of illegal immigrants every year? Would you not take advantage of an existing network of drug and human smuggling operations?

The war against terrorism may not be won along the border with Mexico, but it certainly can be lost there.

One state that has taken decisive action to secure the border is Texas. Governor Rick Perry understands that there can be no homeland security without border security. He has poured millions of dollars into border law enforcement initiatives to dramatically increase the number of officer patrols and tap into new technologies to help border police put a stop to illegal activity.

He is working with local sheriffs to fund their enforcement activities, and the state’s Department of Public Safety to mobilize rapid deployment teams to respond to hot spots and additional investigators.

And he continues to aggressively push the federal government to live up to its responsibility of keeping our borders secure.
